Tourist Visa: A Tourist Visas is granted to United States Citizens visiting Colombia for 30, 60 and 90 days, although you may have to explain the purpose of your stay if you require a 90 day visa. As a Tourist you can visit Colombia a maximum of 6 months per year. In other words you can make 3 trips and stay 60 days each trip during any given year. All visitors to Colombia receive an entry stamp upon arrival at the airport. You are entitled to a 30 day visa extension and the whole time of your stay in Colombia with a tourist visa is limited to six months per year. To extend your visa at the Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad (DAS) office in Medellin you must be prepared to present a valid passport including visa/stamp of entry, four photographs, your onward ticket and a copy (if you don't have one, say you have an e-ticket) and two copies of both the ID page and your entry stamp of your passport. A fee will be assessed at DAS.

Student Visa: This Visa is issued to individuals who wish to study in Colombia as a regular academic student in an elementary, middle, or high school institution; as a student of an institution for higher education in virtue of an exchange student program, or in any other program at a public or private institution recognized by the National Government of Colombia.

Investment Visa: Resident Investor may be granted to a foreigner who makes a direct foreign investment on his name, in accordance with which is foreseen in the statutes of International Investments and additional regulations existing a the time of the application, and for the amount established by the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Pension Visa: This Visa is granted to a foreigner who receives a monthly pension provided by external sources or by a Government entity or Private Company, in a quantity equivalent to a minimum of ten (10) legal monthly salaries.

Marriage Visa: This visa may be issued to a foreign citizen who is legally married to a Colombian citizen, or to the foreign citizen who meets the criteria to be considered a permanent companion (spouse) - i.e.: common law marriage-

Work Visa: This Visa is issued to individuals who wish to stay in the country for temporary periods, representing public or private foreign entities of a commercial or industrial nature, with the purpose of providing technical assistance, products or consulting services to Colombian companies.

Business Visa: The business visa can be issued ONLY to the legal representative, management, or executive staff of a foreign enterprise, of commercial or industrial nature, that has economic ties with Colombia companies or foreign companies legally established in Colombia.

Colombia's monetary system is based on the Colombian Peso.

Normally, you cannot use dollars in Colombia. The best way to pay for lodging, food, service, or other items is with a credit card or Colombian Pesos.

Credit Cards are accepted almost everywhere and you can purchase anything with Colombian Pesos.

The best way to get Colombian Pesos is through the many ATM's located in and around Medellin.

Credit Cards: Major credit cards are accepted almost everywhere.

ATM's: There are 100's of ATMs located throughout Medellin. Unfortunately some ATM's limit the amount you can withdraw each time, usually 200,000 to 400,000 pesos. Others will dispense up to 500,000 pesos, like the one located in the Pomona Grocery store at Oviedo Mall. Additionally, a Citibank ATM, located in the El Poblado Blockbuster will dispense up to 800,000 pesos at a time.

Banks: Most banks do not employ bilingual employees who speak English. So if you have to use a bank and don't speak Spanish take a Colombian friend along.
Money Exchange: One of the least expensive way to obtain cash is by using your ATM card. Check XE.com for the latest exchange rates (peso=cop). Also call your bank to determine the fees involved for foreign ATM withdrawals because most banks charge differently. If you use an exchange agency you will probably pay more fees then using your ATM card.

Pesos: The Colombia Pesos come in the following, paper, denominations: 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 pesos.

Getting to Medellin, Colombia

Medellin's modern airport, Rionegro/Medellin-Jose Maria Cordova (MDE), is 3,353 miles from Los Angeles, 2,502 miles from Dallas, 1,976 miles from Atlanta and 1,381 miles from Miami. The airport is served by Aero Republica, American, Avianca, Copa, and Delta airlines.

Getting to Medellin, Colombia is easy and once you arrive follow the guides below:

Visa Guide: U.S. citizens do not need a Colombian visa for a tourist stay of 90 days or less. Please check http://www.medellinvisitorguide.com/ for detailed information.

Arrival Guide: When you arrive in Medellin depart your aircraft and follow the crowd and signs to Immigration. The Imigration area is downstairs and located next to baggage claim and customs. Wait in line until called by an Immigration Officer and present your passport. The Officer will probably not say much as he reviews your passport. The length of stay granted to you will be determined by the Officer and will be stamped in your passport. Normally, 30 days.
Important: If your staying in Colombia over 30 days ask the Immigration Officer for a 60 day Visa! Don't worry about your spanish since the Officer will understand 60 days in english. Asking for 90 days will probably require a long explanation and review of your departure ticket. After you get your visa stamp make a left turn and walk 30 feet to baggage claim.

Baggage Guide: Keep your luggage claim tags (attached to your ticket jacket)! Collect your luggage and wait in the custom's line. An airport employee will check your claim tags and take your custom's form. You will then be asked to press the light signal for a Red or Green light. If you get a green light you can place your luggage on the X-Ray machine and exit the terminal. If you get a Red light your luggage will be hand inspected by a policeman before you are allowed to exit the terminal. To exit the terminal walk a 20 feet straight ahead and turn right. You will find a lot of people waiting for their relatives, numerous taxi drivers and porters wanting to help you with your baggage. Hang on to your luggage if you don't want help and advise "no gracias" with a smile. Otherwise they will help by pulling luggage from your hand!

Ground Transportation Guide: The best was to get to the Medellin City Center, your hotel or apartment, is by Taxi. The city center is 19 miles Southeast of the airport and a short 30 minute taxi ride via the new Las Palmas express way. A Taxi will cost approximately 50,000 pesos, about $25.00, or you can ride a mini-bus for approximately 8,000 pesos, about $4.00, but we suggest a Taxi.

Important: The best and safest way to get to your hotel or apartment is by pre-arranging a taxi or personal driver.
